Why Dowel plate is used in Industrial warehousing Concrete flooring?

 1. Why Dowel Plates are used?

In a warehouse, concrete floor slabs are cast in sections. Without a connector, when a heavy forklift drives from one slab to another, the first slab deflects (bends) downward, creating a "step" that the wheels hit. This leads to: Faillure of Concrete floor.

  • Joint Spalling: The edges of the concrete break off.

  • Load Transfer: Dowel plates allow the load to be shared between two adjacent slabs, ensuring they move together vertically while allowing for horizontal shrinkage.

to avoid such  a cracking for long term flooring to be maintained dowel plates are used.

2. Technical Specifications:

Unlike traditional round dowels, plate dowels (usually diamond or rectangular shaped) offer "2D" movement.

  • Material: Typically E250 or E 350 Grade Steel .

  • Sleeve Material: High-density polyethylene (HDPE)  or ABS to allow the steel to slide as concrete shrinks. abs matetrial For high temp it can sustain.

  • Plate Thickness: Usually 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, or 12mm., depenimng on floor size we can design dowel plate size.

  • Standard Compliance: Designed according to TR34 (4th Edition) .this is internation code used across world by concrete engineers.

3. Dowel Plates Data :

PropertyValue (Standard Industrial)
Yield Strength235 - 355 MPA
Plate Dimensions110mm x 110mm (Diamond) or 150mm x 120mm (Rectangular)
CoatingHot-Dip Galvanized (for corrosion resistance)
Free MovementUp to 20mm (Horizontal)

4. Sizing Calculation Example:

  • Slab Thickness < 150mm: Typically uses 6mm plates at 450mm spacing.

  • Slab Thickness 150mm–200mm: Typically uses 8mm or 10mm plates at 300mm–450mm spacing.

  • Heavily Loaded (VNA Warehouses): Usually 12mm plates are required to ensure zero vertical deflection.

5. Advantages:

  • Reduced Concrete Stress:  Diamond shapes allow the slab to expand and contract in two directions, preventing "corner cracking."

  • No Drilling Required: Sleeves are attached to the formwork before pouring, saving labor costs compared to drilling for round bars.

  • Higher Load Transfer Efficiency: Plates provide a wider surface area against the concrete compared to round bars, reducing the risk of concrete "bursting."

  • Forklift Longevity: Smooth joints mean less vibration and damage to expensive forklift tires and electronics.

6. Application Era (The Modern Warehouse):

  • Cold Storage: Slabs shrink significantly in sub-zero temperatures. Plate dowels are essential here to allow for large joint openings (up to 20mm) while maintaining load capacity.

  • Airport Hangars: Used in heavy-load areas where maintenance and repair downtime must be avoided at all costs.
